Help STOP the Silence: Suicide Prevention and Support
Our program, Help STOP the Silence Suicide Prevention & Support, is a suicide prevention and support program based out of the Catholic Social Services Greater Hazleton office. We are currently the only local program to provide in-school student assemblies, teacher in-services, and community & workplace assemblies providing education on, mental health awareness, how to identify at-risk behaviors to prevent suicide, and where to seek local help.
Annually, the first Sunday in May we host the Help STOP the Silence Walk to Prevent Suicide at Hazleton Area High School. This community awareness walk aims to reduce stigma, encouraging those at risk to seek help along with providing support for those left behind. All proceeds remain local in providing services to our community.
We also held our 1st Annual “Cougars DUNK DEPRESSION” Charity Basketball Game in May in an effort to remove the stigma associated with mental health and to raise mental health awareness in our school community. In particular, depression.
Support for those affected by suicide is also provided. We have a trained volunteer to offer peer support to the newly bereaved. Additionally, we provide a support group to those affected by suicide loss. This is a no-fee open grief group that welcomes survivors of suicide loss at any stage of their grieving process. You don't need to sign up; just show up. Anyone in need of support after the loss of a loved one is welcome. Participants enter the group, leave, and return as they feel the need. This group, facilitated by a professional and peer, meets the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of each month from 6-7:30 PM at Catholic Social Services, 200 West Chapel St., Hazleton, PA 18201. Because we’re LOCAL, the funds we raise remain local benefiting local residents!!
